Some Guidance Please

I’m trying to create a header for my blog but can’t master the website editor where you customize your site appearance with the block editor. It’s supposed to be easy, I find it difficult. No matter what I do, it doesn’t turn out the way I want.

The images you see here are just drafts of headers that I created in Vista Create, an online graphic design platform for non-designers. It’s easy to get stuck there for hours, but it’s fun.

Am I on the right track in terms of design, or does it look too simple? You can certainly answer that, but to manage to get my header in place, I’ll probably have to use WP support.

I will be very happy if you want to leave a comment—just tell me what you think. Whether it’s positive or negative doesn’t matter. What would be worse is if no one thinks anything at all.

    Your designs look lovely. I love how the camera appears to be dangling off the “I”. If I had to choose my favorite one, I would say the last one, it is simple and elegant.
    Also, I agree with you about the site editor, I cannot quite master it either.

    All designs are pretty. I’m most drawn to the top one with the orange fall leaves. But, that might require changing it for different seasons. ? Have fun finding one you like. 🙂

    I like your drafts too. However, I maybe would make a choice between ‘Anita’s images’ and ‘simply photography’, and not use both terms in the same header. And for the sake of clearness I might want to skip the graphic of the camera, although I do like the hanging camera, but somehow it clutters a bit. So I think I like the bottom header best, with the leaves and just the text ‘Anita’s images’, and no further graphic(s). Well, i’m curious what your header is going to be. I wish you succes Anita!

      Thank you so much for your valuable thoughts and opinions Peter. I really appreciate it and realize you are absolutely right about not to use the both terms in the same header.
      As for the hanging camera, I’m dubious. What I want should ideally look stylish and neat. The camera, although a fun idea, spoils the impression a bit.

      Yes, I also completely agree with Peter, he is right and I have decided to use only “Simply photography” in the header and “Anita’s Images” as my logo.
      I also like the autumn leaves, but they might not go so well when it’s summer and hot here in Cyprus.

    I like the designs and font you used. My preference would be to use only “Simply Photography.” It’s simple and yet has an aristocratic aura to it. It gets your point and blog purpose across very clearly.

      Thanks a lot for your thoughts Egídio. I do appreciate it and I’m glad that you mention your preference in such a positive way. That’s exactly what I want and I’ve decided to use “Simply Photography.” “Anita’s Images” can be my logo and not in the header.

    I like the first header best, although you might find the orange/red coloring gets to be problematic. I also like the last, perhaps with dimensions closer to the first header. I’ve always found that green/gray/black/white plays nicely with almost everything, like the colors in nature. I do like the hanging camera.

    I prefer the colours of the first image, (you know me!), but I agree that it might look odd in winter or spring… The two sets of words is OK by me, as the obvious difference in size suggests one is for one thing (your blog title) and the other describes the purpose of the website. Though I would a) make the Anita’s Image text slightly larger, b) move the larger text up a fraction so that it doesn’t look like it’s standing on the table and c) lose the dangling camera altogether as my immediate reaction was that it looked ‘false’. Maybe put just the camera (no strap) on the table?
    Sorry I cannot help with the other technical stuff as I’ve never tried to do anything like that.

    Thanks so much for your thoughts and advice Mike. Yes, autumn’s colors are beautiful, but we also have other seasons, so I believe in softer colors. My photos are often quite colorful, so that might be enough. But on the other hand, color is joy and means so much to the overall impression.

    There have been divided opinions about having both two sets of words. The thought from my side was exactly as you write, blog title and description.

    I think it looks nicer with a header that has a soft color background with the text “Simply Photography” and my blog title as a logo. But I will probably change my mind several times before I’m done and when I’m finally done I don’t know how to get my header in place with the block editor. Haha.. 😂

    I like the first header best as it leaves (pun intended!) more space around the words and they stand out more. As for getting it where you want it, I find each theme is different in that respect but I would use the customise theme setting rather than block editor. In my theme (Ashe) I edit my header in the section called ‘Header Image, Slider & Video’ but it may be different for yours?

      Thank you, Sarah, for your views and advice. I have the Twenty Twenty-Three theme, where I can only use the latest WordPress block editor. Today, I regret choosing it because I don’t fully understand how to use it. Initially, I received help from another blogger, but it didn’t prove to be a long-term solution. If I switch to another theme, I would have to start from scratch and lose the progress I’ve made with the help I received. However, maybe that’s what I should do because this is becoming too time-consuming.

          No, I’ve decided to use WordPress Support instead. Today I got help via their Live chat to change my Header size template. It took an hour, they are amazing.

    I like your first one too, but I kind of agree with it being too seasonal. So you may want to look for photos where there is more void space, so your tile and tag line ca be easily seen. I have no clue how the themes work anymore, so making your own header is a good idea. Your last header is good. I would put your name smaller on top of Simply Photography. For your name, use an easy to read smaller non-script font. Then leave some space between the two. That would give you more void space on the photo.

    Hur du får till det “tekniska” i WP har jag ingen aning om. WP överstiger min IQ som du vet. Trodde att Anna skulle skapa en ny header/blogglayout åt dig…
    Jag gillar översta headern bäst. Den är vackrast, även om höstlöven kanske inte är så karakteristiska för just Cypern. Om du byter ut löven mot till exempel vatten/vågor så funkar det:-)

      Tack Beate. Ja, den översta är kanske bäst men sen jag lade ut det här har jag suttit i timmar och försökt skapa något som är bättre!!! Haha.. det går sakta framåt fast jag kommer ingen vart. Ångrar att jag bytte till ett tema som jag inte behärskar men byter jag till ett annat så försvinner mycket av det som jag gärna vill ha kvar, det som Anna skapade åt mig i början. Nu fortsätter jag på egen hand, kommunikationen oss emellan fungerade inte.

    Många bra förslag har du fått. Jag är en sån som har svårt att välja, men jag tänkte spontant att den vackra höstheadern inte känns som Cypern. Vore jag du skulle jag välja något som placerar din blogg just där, något speciellt.

      Skönt att det inte bara är jag som har svårigheter när det gäller att välja :)) Nej, headern med höstlöv känns inte helt rätt. Jag fortsätter att testa mig fram tills det känns bra. Tar tid men är ganska så roligt också.

    Jag tyckte ditt tema innan var väldigt bra och dina fina bilder kom fram fint. Trist med ett byte av tema som inte känns bra. Kanske kan du byta tillbaka även om du då förlorar en del-
    Att hitta en header är knepigt och jag tyckte fler av de du hade som förslag var fina. Sen beror det ju på om din header ska var år idsbunden eller mer “all around”- Du är en duktig fotograf och har säkert många bilder att välja bland. Och det kan ju också göra det hela svårt. Men kanske en bild där du känner att du är just du-

      Hej Ditte! Tack så jättemycket för både besök och kommentar här hos mig. Blev både glad och överraskad!!
      Mitt förra tema var inte så bra eftersom det inte framgick att det var en blogg. Det var iallafall vad jag fick höra. Dessutom bestod startsidan bara av ett rutnät av bilder utan varken datum eller titel och heller ingen header.
      Fick hjälp i början med det här nya temat och har bestämt att fortsätta med det jag har. Stöter jag på problem har jag WordPress Support, de är helt fantastiska. Idag fick jag hjälp att ändra storleken på utrymmet för Header. Det tog en timme via deras Livechat.
      Jag fortsätter testa olika header tills jag funnit den som känns rätt. Vill helst ha en “all around” och inte hålla på att byta. Men jag kan ju alltid ändra mig vilket inte är ovanligt :))

      Tittar in hos dig imorgon, det börjar bli sent här nu och vovvarna ska ut.

    I like the first one … yes, I know it looks like autumn, but the colours are so pretty! And I like the ‘blurred’ background.
