When I moved to Malta in 2000, there was no such modern architecture on the island.
The old houses are often well-preserved with a genuine Maltese architecture. Today, modern structures at Tigné Point strongly contrast with the buildings in Valletta as well as with most of the towns on the island. The only building that had a modern style when I moved here was the Portomaso Business Tower which opened in 2001. With its 97 meters it is still the tallest building in Malta.
The construction industry is currently booming here in Malta and new high-rise houses are being built almost everywhere. Hopefully they are also thinking of preserving as much as possible of the old houses, otherwise Malta will lose a lot of its charm.
This week, Krista asks us to share images of where we live. What do we love about where we live?
Malta is an island in the Mediterranean Sea located south of Italy. It´s one of the smallest countries in the world with an estimated population of 422,000. It´s a popular tourist destination with its warm climate and architectural and historical monuments. Malta has some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world and the capital Valletta is designated as the Capital of Culture 2018!
Love the wonderful nature, especially in spring with all wildflowers and a stunning greenery all over the island. Not to be found during the hot summer months.Who doesn’t love the typical Maltese balconies, painted in different colors…
… and where in Europe can you buy fresh sweet strawberries even in winter.
The local wine is very tasteful as well as many other local produces. Then we have the colorful fishing boats known as Maltese luzzu. There are much much more I would like to share, but I think I have to stop here and consider a part two…

This picture was taken in a window display that reflects the background where I stand.
I did it for fun even though the result became a bit messy, but at least, colorful.

Notice the Pumpkins on the wall!
Wherever you are on this island your are always close to the sea.
Malta is Europe’s southernmost state with a population of about 450,000 d. I love this country and I’m more than grateful for being able to live on this small island in the Mediterranean Sea. I’ll try to show you why! This is a typical Maltese balcony and the honey-colored façade is made of limestone, the preferred building material on these islands. Yes, Malta consists of three islands. Note the cables, more or less a mess but it works. English is widely spoken but Malta has its own language. The streets are usually named in Maltese, which is hardly visible on the first picture, on Trejqet il bajja, but above, on the road sign.Bougainvillea, my favorite among flowers and you see them growing almost everywhere. Then we have the climate. Malta enjoys 3,000 hours of sunshine per year which is one of the highest in Europe. The mild winters and warm to hot summers makes it an ideal place to live on. More to come in part 2…
At the moment, I feel quite ambivalent and don´t know what to photograph or why I photograph what I actually photograph. Macro, people, architecture, flowers, my everyday life here in Malta. There´s so much I want to share, but sometimes my posts may looks a bit incoherent. That’s life! Hope you enjoy this anyway.
