About the Basenji
Basenjis are an extraordinary and ancient breed, often referred to as “the barkless dog.” They are admired for their elegance, intelligence, and unique personalities.
The name Basenji is believed to mean “bush thing”, reflecting the breed’s origins in Africa. Evidence suggests Basenjis existed as far back as 4000 BCE, with depictions found in ancient Egyptian art. Basenjis do not bark in the traditional sense due to the structure of their larynx. Instead, they produce a distinctive sound often described as a yodel or “barroo.”
Each Basenji is highly individual, known for independence, curiosity, and a mischievous sense of humor. With their short coat, upright ears, curled tail, and expressive wrinkles, they have a look that is both alert and elegant.
Like cats, Basenjis are meticulous about grooming and shed very little. They love warmth and will always seek out the sunniest spot to rest. Intelligent and quick learners, they are also famously independent — training a Basenji requires patience, creativity, and mutual respect.
