From My Archive #5 – Stockholm Revisited (Part 1)

These photos were taken during one of my visits back to Stockholm in 2016, after moving from Sweden to Malta in 2000.
I haven’t been back to my former hometown in several years, and sadly most of the photographs from those visits have been lost over time. That makes these remaining images feel even more special today.

A colorful little corner of Södermalm beneath a deep blue September sky.
It is easy to forget that scenes like this can still be found in the middle of Stockholm.

The old “Drick Ramlösa” neon sign with an advertising slogan for the Swedish mineral water company Ramlösa, which means “Drink Ramlösa” — a classic Stockholm detail that I’m not even sure still exists today.

The alleyways of Stockholm’s Old Town are narrow and countless, lined with old buildings in warm and colorful shades.

Café Chokladkoppen (“The Chocolate Cup”) at Stortorget in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town.
A typical September afternoon in Stockholm, with cafés still busy despite the early autumn chill.

The sculpture of  Dutch troubadour Cornelis Vreeswijk in Cornelisparken on Södermalm.
I always liked his music and lyrics, so this felt like a fitting final image for Part 1 of my Stockholm archive.
More photographs from my former hometown will follow in Part 2.

I like these pictures a lot Anita. A couple of years ago I was a happy visitor in beautiful Stockholm, and the colours of the buildings in Gamla Stan are still vidid on my mind. Interestingly, Cornelis Vreewijk was already famous in Sweden before he was known in the Nether;lands. I remember quite well how in the seventees he suddenly climbed in the Dutch hitparade, and, after some time, more or less dissapeared again. Although everybody of my age can still sings some of the lines from (the Dutch version of) ‘Veronica’. 🙂

Thank you so much Peter. I’m happy to hear that Stockholm left such vivid memories for you too, especially the colours of Gamla Stan.
I actually didn’t know that Cornelis Vreeswijk became well known in the Netherlands later on. He seems to drift in and out of our lives like a familiar breeze. He was already considered something of a legend in Sweden when I grew up, and yes, “Veronica” still echoes here too.
It is fascinating how music can travel between countries and still remain connected to certain memories and generations.🙂

Thank you, Brian, I’m glad the colours and that little touch of Stockholm charm spoke to you.😊
