Photographing butterflies is a mixture of patience, timing and accepting that nature has its own agenda. Sometimes everything comes together perfectly and a butterfly remains still long enough. Other times, just as I press the shutter, it decides to leave.

These images were taken during walks in Cyprus. Some are sharp, some less so, but together they tell the same story: butterflies may be beautiful subjects, yet they are not always the most cooperative models.

This one chose a sunlit stone wall as its resting place. I think it may be a Meadow Brown, although butterfly identification is not my strongest skill. Whatever its name, the warm orange tones looked beautiful against the pale limestone.

Butterflies don’t always pose on request.
After a while, it was far more cooperative and stayed on a thistle long enough for a few photographs.
This may be a Wall Brown, but I’m not sure.

Fortunately, not every butterfly was in such a hurry. This little visitor provided a colourful ending to my walk.
