This week’s Flower Hour continues the alphabet with the letters D, E and F.
I’ve chosen a few plants from the Cypriot countryside, identified by their scientific names.
E – European Turnsole (Heliotropium europaeum)
The flower above may not be large or colourful, but its tiny white flowers and hairy stems are well worth a closer look.
D – Daucus carota (Wild carrot)
Wild Carrot is one of the most familiar wildflowers in the Mediterranean countryside.
From delicate white blooms to its fascinating “bird’s nest” seed head, it changes beautifully throughout the season.

E – Echium angustifolium (Narrow-leaved Viper’s-bugloss)
This may look delicate, but its vivid flowers are among the highlights of the Cypriot spring countryside.
F – Ferula communis (Giant Fennel)
Giant Fennel is one of the tallest wild plants on Cyprus. Its enormous flower heads emerge from large leaf sheaths before opening into bright yellow umbels that attract countless insects. Click on the images to spot a few of them.
