This Painted Lady seemed completely immersed in its own quiet routine, resting among dew-covered flowers without paying any attention to me or my camera. For a brief moment, everything around it felt perfectly still.
Moving slowly through its own morning ritual.
Calm. Present. Unaware.
A small wonder of nature, without ever knowing it.
Beautiful, without trying to be.
Vanessa cardui, the most widespread of all butterfly species, yet unique in its simplicity.

Painted lady butterflies are common where I live, which is Austin, Texas, so it surprises me to see people photographing them on other continents. According to Wikipedia, “Vanessa cardui is the most widespread of all butterfly species…, found on every continent except Antarctica and South America.”
Painted ladies are common here in Cyprus, so I’m always happy to see them. It’s fascinating how widespread they are — I didn’t realise they occur on almost every continent. Nature never stops surprising us.

Tack så mycket. Det här var verkligen ett tillfälle som jag är mycket glad över. Det vanligaste är att de inte alls vill vara med på bild, flyger hit och dit, stannar till för en kort sekund och sen fortsätter vidare.
