This morning I spotted a large lizard while walking my dogs here in Paphos.
It stayed completely motionless, even when I came very close. For a moment I honestly wondered if it was alive at all.

It looked as though the lizard was watching me, yet it stayed perfectly still.
I could even nudge it gently with a blade of grass without any reaction, while Sally, my dog, stood beside me.

For a brief moment, a tiny grasshopper rested on the lizard’s tail before hopping away again.

Later, when we passed the same spot again, it suddenly turned its head and ran off quickly through the dry grass.
I was happy — and relieved — to discover it was very much alive.

Reptiles like these have existed on Earth for millions of years.
Watching them always feels like a brief glimpse into another age.
