I found this graceful little visitor resting on my kitchen wall the other day. At first glance it looked like an oversized mosquito, but its delicate wings and extraordinary appearance suggested it was something quite different.

From what I’ve been able to find, it appears to belong to the thread-winged lacewing family (Nemopteridae)
It may even be Necrophylus arenarius, a species found in the eastern Mediterranean,
although I haven’t been able to confirm the exact species from photographs alone.

Before long, it flew away through the open kitchen door and disappeared.
