The Swallowtail That Played Hard to Get

I’ve seen Swallowtails several times in my garden, always flying past just fast enough to make sure I couldn’t get a photo.
This time, one was flying around our lemon tree — and it had no intention of making things any easier for me.

After standing there with my camera, waiting for the butterfly to finally cooperate, I suddenly realised there were two of them! They darted around the tree, landing for barely a second before taking off again.

While patiently waiting for the butterflies to slow down, these two were willing to pose instead.

Finally, a decent shot! After all that chasing around the lemon tree, I’m quite happy with this one.
And can you spot the tiny little caterpillar hiding in the picture?

But you got it in the end. Nice job. 🤣😎🙃

Eventually! The butterfly clearly decided I’d suffered enough. 😎🦋 Many thanks for your comment Mr. Ohh.😊

Du kämpade bra och fick ett toppen foto till sist! Ja, jag ser den lilla larven men bara för att du frågade. Annars hade jag inte upptäckt den 😀 Ha det gott!

      Tack så mycket Kristallina! ☺️

They can be a complete pain when they want to be!
What interests me is the reason they were around the lemon tree. There doesn’t seem to be any flowers to nectar on and the last image shows what looks very much like egg laying! But European Swallowtails don’t lay on lemon trees but plants like fennel, wild carrot and rue. I’m confused. Great shots though.

Thank you, Brian! I was wondering why they kept circling the lemon tree. There are no flowers on it, yet they seemed very interested in that specific tree, and I’ve seen them there before.

Congratulations on capturing images of this very elusive butterfly. I often try and get lots of blanks with an occasional success shot.

Thank you, Egidio! They slip away quickly, I have many missed attempts myself. These were just a few lucky moments.

Chasing them around the lemon tree was worth it, Anita. The final shot is stunning! And yes, I spotted the tiny caterpillar hiding there. 🍋🐛 I struggled all summer to catch some beautiful butterflies myself, but had no luck. This year they were so restless and never seemed to rest, not even in the hibiscus garden, which is their favorite spot. 🌺🦋

Thank you, Aura! I’m glad one of them finally behaved for a moment. They were restless here as well this summer, never settling anywhere. So I completely understand your struggle. Although we could have worse worries, it’s funny how these tiny creatures can still test our patience.

Likadant som med människor så behöver inte alla fjärilsfoton vara poserande, du lyckades fota denna vackra väldigt fint och fick andra fina insekter på köpet.
