From My Archive #8 – Malta’s Colourful Fishing Boats

Malta’s colourful fishing boats, known as luzzus, are among the island’s most iconic sights.

Painted in bright blues, yellows, reds and greens,
these traditional boats bring every harbour to life and reflect the colour and character of the island.

One detail you’ll notice on many of the boats is the painted eye on the bow.
Known as the Eye of Horus, it’s a traditional symbol believed to protect fishermen and guide them safely at sea.

The painted eye is one of the most recognisable features of Malta’s colourful luzzus.

These photographs were taken during my 21 years on the island before I moved to Cyprus in 2021.
Some places stay with you long after you’ve left them. Malta is one of those places.

Thank you for commenting, Mike. After 21 years in Malta, a piece of it still travels with me here in Cyprus. Some places never really leave us.☺️🌞

With those colors, I can easily see why this place stays in your mind. I loved the gallery and colors.

Thanks, Brian. Malta’s harbours are wonderfully colourful, and they’ve stayed with me over the years.
