Life in My Garden

Five years have passed since we left Malta, and our garden in Cyprus has become a place I truly enjoy. Every season brings something new to discover, from colourful flowers and ripening fruit to dragonflies and other welcome visitors.

One of the plants I enjoy seeing from my kitchen window is the White Bird of Paradise, especially when it’s in bloom.

The passion flower is one of our garden’s most extraordinary blooms.
The vine grows remarkably fast and, left to itself, would happily take up a lot more space than we planned for it.

The flowers are naturally replaced by passion fruits. I wait until the fruit falls to the ground before picking it, as that’s when it’s fully ripe. Occasionally, a gentle shake of the vine helps uncover a few hidden among the foliage.

When this shrub is in bloom, it’s covered with hundreds of bright red flowers. I chose to focus on just one branch.

Fresh figs are one of my favourite treats. Our two young fig trees are still maturing, so every ripe fig is worth the wait.
Here in Cyprus, fresh figs are usually available well into December, although this year’s fig season is running a little late.

Our garden pond attracts many dragonflies during the warmer months.
They often pause on a nearby grass stem, as if posing for the camera.

Oh, I almost forgot…
Can you identify the insect in the featured image?
Many people hear it every summer but rarely get a close look.
I’ll be sharing more about this fascinating creature in a future post.

Wow! What a garden you have! So many treats to enjoy. The cicada in the opening shot is amazing. The details are great, as always. Here’s a coincidence: the passion flower vine is the host plant for the Gulf Fritillary butterfly.

Thank you, Egídio. I’m glad you enjoyed this little glimpse into my garden. Yes, that coincidence with the passion flower and the Gulf Fritillary was fun to learn, even though the butterfly isn’t found here in Cyprus.

Your photos are all beautiful. Re figs, I’m not fond of them. However, my dad loved them. Especially when my mom made them into fig preserves.

Thank you, Sue. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. Figs aren’t for everyone, but fig preserves made with love sound pretty wonderful, your dad must have been delighted.

Jag förstår mycket väl att du älskar trädgården. Helt underbara foton! Nej, jag har ingen aning vad insekten heter eller är. Ha det riktigt bra i sommarvärmen.

Tack Kristallina. Jag blir alltid lika glad när du tittar in här hos mig 🤗 Cikadorna syns inte så ofta men låter desto mer. Roligt att du inte visste vad det var, jag var nästan lite orolig att det skulle vara för lätt att gissa, haha. 😁
Ha det fint i sommarvärmen du också.

Did you inherit the garden as is or did you do the planting? It’s quite wonderful.
That’s an easy quiz Anita, a Cicada. Don’t know which species though.
How about a Red Skimmer for the Dragonfly 😁

Thank you, Brian. The garden was quite neglected when we bought the house, so most of the plants we’ve added ourselves, though we did inherit an old apricot tree and a lemon tree. And yes, I understand the cicada was an easy one for you. A city dweller might struggle a bit more, but they probably wouldn’t visit my blog anyway, haha 😂
As for the dragonfly, you may be right, I’m not entirely sure about the species.
